In the cloud-shrouded peaks of the Guji zone, the Hambella community exists in perfect rhythm with one of the highest coffee-growing landscapes on Earth. Rather than merely farming the land, these families view themselves as caretakers of an ancient mountain ecosystem. For generations, the Hambella people have passed down a profound understanding of their unique microclimate, treating coffee not just as an agricultural product, but as a central thread of their cultural inheritance.

Thriving at these extreme altitudes requires a deep reliance on ancestral knowledge and communal harmony. It is a culture built on the philosophy of collective care, where elder wisdom guides the younger generation and neighbors work in seamless cooperation to balance the demands of the mountain seasons. This shared commitment to preserving both their heritage and their land is what gives Hambella coffee its distinct soul.

Hambella Station

This generational expertise finds a modern ally at the Hambella station, where a dedicated network of local smallholders collaborates with Bette Buna. The partnership is anchored by a year-round commitment to community empowerment, starting long before the harvest with an annual 3-day forum. During this gathering, farmers and Bette Buna representatives sit down to collaboratively establish living wage pricing, agree on volume and quality benchmarks, and plan future community infrastructure investments.

When the harvest begins, the focus shifts to the slow, meticulous work of hand-gathering. Hambella’s farmers cultivate small "coffee gardens" averaging 1.0 to 1.5 hectares, tucked beneath the protective canopy of indigenous shade trees. Growing at staggering elevations between 2,100 and 2,200 meters, the cherries develop at a glacial pace. This extended maturation period allows the sugars to deeply concentrate, resulting in the explosive fruit and delicate floral notes unique to this microclimate. Alongside these heirloom coffee trees, families maintain bio-diverse plots, growing native food crops to sustain their households and keep the soil healthy.
